County Attorney, Doug Decker

Mr. Decker has served as McKinley County’s General Counsel; as Civil Deputy District Attorney from October 2, 1995; and, brought in-house as McKinley County Attorney on July 1, 2004.

Born and raised in Holbrook, Arizona, Mr. Decker is well aware of the cultural opportunities that come with living in and around large Native American and diverse populations.  Mr. Decker graduated from the University of New Mexico Law School in 1990 and practiced privately in Albuquerque until 1995.  Mr. Decker is involved in the local bar and serves on various local committees and is active in the community and his religious organization.

Q. What are the zoning regulations in McKinley County?
 

A. There is no zoning in McKinley County. McKinley County regulates the division of land and development of land through Subdivision Regulations, 1997. For a letter regarding Zoning or other specific information, please contact the Legal Department.

Q. How can we get McKinley County to maintain our roads?


A. McKinley County maintains approximately 500 miles of road throughout the county. McKinley County adopted a Non-Subdivision Road Work Policy to help citizens in obtaining necessary right-of-way and acceptance for road maintenance. Contact the Road Department with further questions.


Q. How can I obtain Legislative Financing? Will McKinley County become a fiscal agent for legislative grants?


A. McKinley County adopted a Legislative Regulation Policy administered at the New Mexico Council of Governments (NMCOG). The policy has certain forms designed to describe the status of project and readiness for funding. Contact NMCOG or the Legal Department with further questions.


Q. Does the Legal Department get involved in Property Tax issues?


A. The County Attorney advises the County Treasurer and the County Assessor in valuation, protest, tax collection and penalty issues. There are various time constraints for citizens to protest. Contact the County Treasurer, County Assessor or Legal Department with further questions.
